EUIPO sees significant rise in EU trademark applications in 2021

C&F hopeful for economic recovery and new innovative spirit

Düsseldorf, June 28, 2021 – The number of EU trademark applications filed at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) has skyrocketed in recent months. Annual growth had historically hovered between 3.5 and 5 percent, but the office saw a rise of 10 percent in 2020 and of almost 28 percent in the first four months of 2021. According to the EUIPO, the sizeable increase was linked to applications from China as well as European countries, the United States, and Japan. “Online commerce is booming, and everyone who wants to sell on large platforms needs to show they have IP protection,” says Karin Kuhl, EUIPO Operations Director. She sees the development as a “positive sign of the attractiveness of the European market and trust in the EU trade mark system.”

Cohausz & Florack (C&F) is also delighted about the huge increase in the number of applications. “This suggests that the economy is recovering and becoming active again after months of pandemic-induced restrictions,” says Rebekka Schiffer, lawyer and partner at C&F. “We hope that this will continue and we will continue supporting our clients in remaining innovative.” C&F as a firm specializes in trademark law and belongs to the top is one of the firms filing the most applications at the EUIPO. Since EUIPO’s creation in 1994, the office has become a key EU institution with a global reach.
