New WIPO Lex-Judgments database now online

WIPO platform provides comprehensive IP information from around the world

Dusseldorf, October 14, 2020 – On September 24, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) made available the new WIPO Lex-Judgments database. It enables users to access legal information on intellectual property rights from around the world free of charge. The database provides access to court decisions that are deemed by courts or other authorities to be fundamental judgments. It also contains cross-references to international treaties and national laws. The user interface is available in English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish and also provides access to foreign IP judgments through machine translation tools. The court decisions listed in the database are managed by the national authorities of each WIPO member state.

The new database can be useful not only for judges, but also for political decision-makers, lawyers, and universities. It is intended to contribute to a better understanding of how courts worldwide deal with complex IP disputes.

With the introduction of WIPO Lex-Judgments, WIPO is responding to the needs of numerous judicial authorities, thus expanding its existing WIPO Lex portal, which contains a comprehensive global collection of IP laws and treaties. "The database is also a valuable aid for us in advising our clients," says Andreas Thielmann, patent attorney and partner at Cohausz & Florack.
