New Technologies – New Paths for Arbitration

Book Arbitration in the Digital Age with contribution by C&F attorney Erik Schäfer

üsseldorf, March 7, 2018 – Digitalization is having an enormous influence on the economy and society – and thus also on international arbitration. The book Arbitration in the Digital Age – The Brave New World of Arbitration, edited by Maud Piers and Christian Aschauer, provides information on the possibilities and applications of new technologies in this field. Arbitrators, scientists, and other experts from the field of arbitration provide insights into current developments and future trends.

In his contribution, Erik Schäfer, attorney and partner at Cohausz & Florack, deals with arbitration institutions. He points out that new technologies have so far played a relatively minor role in this area. The expert explains that in order to maintain their position in the market, institutions would do well to rapidly expand their information and communication technologies. In that way, they could also make their services attractive to target groups for which topics such as cloud-based services and industry 4.0 have already long been part of everyday business life.

In further articles, the authors of the book deal with the legal validity of decisions in the context of electronic and online arbitration proceedings. They also address the question of how the Internet, and social media in particular, can influence the behavior of the relevant parties. The book Arbitration in the Digital Age provides arbitrators and lawyers with valuable insights into current technical developments and their purpose and value for international arbitration.
