Maxeon files suit against Tongwei at Düsseldorf Regional Court

Düsseldorf, June 27, 2023 – Maxeon Solar Technologies, one of the world’s leading manufacturers in the solar sector, has filed a patent infringement suit against Tongwei Solar and its subsidiary, Tongwei Solar GmbH, at Düsseldorf Regional Court (Landgericht). The lawsuit concerns European Patent No. EP3522045 B1, which refers to the shingled solar cell technology Maxeon uses in its Performance Line solar modules. According to the company, the Performance Line innovations are protected by a patent portfolio of more than 120 granted patents and more than 80 pending patent applications. These cover global markets including the USA, China, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia. Maxeon already took legal action against Canadian Solar in Japan in September 2020. This suit was settled in April 2022.

“The solar market is in motion. This is evidenced by the innovations of large market players, but also by their litigation activities at the important courts, as the example of Maxeon against Tongwei at Düsseldorf Regional Court clearly shows,” says Gottfried Schüll, patent attorney and partner at Cohausz & Florack (C&F).
