50 years of the EPC: Unified Patent Court opens a new chapter in the European IP system

Düsseldorf, February 14, 2024 – The European Patent Convention (EPC) celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. Since it was signed on October 5, 1973, the EPC has stood for technological progress, innovative strength, and legal certainty in Europe

(see other C&F press releases on this topic). Today, inventors, researchers, and companies benefit from the favorable conditions created by the EPC, which allow them to enforce their intellectual property rights effectively in Europe.

The Unified Patent Court (UPC) brings a further crucial step forward in the harmonization of patent law. The UPC opened its doors on June 1, 2023. As a European court, it has since dealt with patents independently, ensuring that proceedings are conducted more quickly and cost-effectively. The UPC offers patent holders in up to 24 EU states uniform protection for their ideas.

“The sustainability, quality, and certainty we see in today’s European IP case law is largely thanks to the EPC. The same goes for the creation of the Unified Patent Court, which, as a central instance, takes the European patent system to a new level,” says Dr. Peter Reckenthäler, patent attorney and partner at Cohausz & Florack.
