Spotlight on China - What you need to know on IP law and doing business in China

CFUpdate China IP Basics and CFTalks China IP and Business Insights on May 16, 2017 in Düsseldorf

According to the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), China overtook the U.S. in 2016 to become Germany’s most important trading partner. However, for businesses that consider venturing into or that are already active in China, protecting their technology, know-how and IP from theft and plagiarism is a key concern.

But, this is just one side of the coin. Statistics show that Chinese companies are highly active in creating and enforcing their own IP. They are actively using the Chinese IP system, which is already highly developed today. Hence foreign companies are well advised to carefully explore the Chinese IP landscape and use the IP system to their own advantage. By numbers, already now, China is by far the most important IP venue in the world with more than 2 million invention patent and utility model patent filings and more than 3 million trademark and design patent filings per year.

Our dual seminar Spotlight on China will provide you in a nutshell with what you need to know on IP law in China and doing business there.

The first part of the seminar is a CFUpdate event on China IP Basics with introductory lectures by expert patent attorneys with ample hands-on experience, who will provide you with the basics and latest developments in patent prosecution, patent litigation and know-how protection in China. This in-depth CFUpdate seminar is recommended if you want to obtain a comprehensive introduction to or refresh your knowledge on obtaining and enforcing your IP and know-how in China.

The second part of the seminar is a CFTalks event on China IP and Business Insights, which takes the information from the first part to a higher level.

Here, Ben Wang, former head of patents China for Unilever, will shed light on different strategic aspects of IP prosecution and litigation from an executive level business perspective. This part will also include a hands-on case report from Susanne Szczesny-Oßing, the Chairwoman of the Supervisory Boards at EWM AG, on the Do’s and Don’ts of starting business in China. Professor Taube, a luminary in the field of East Asian Economic Studies/China, will share with us a more global perspective on “China at the crossroads – global value chains and domestic demands”. The session will be rounded off by a panel discussion on successful business interaction and negotiation strategies in China.

The CFUpdate and CFTalks parts of the seminar complement each other and can conveniently be attended successively in one afternoon. However, they can also be booked individually. Attendance of the CFUpdate China IP Basics will not be necessary to be able to follow and understand the more high-level CFTalks event on China IP and Business Insights. As always, there will be ample time around the seminars for networking and more in-depth discussions with the speakers and panelists.

The target audience for CFUpdate and CFTalks by COHAUSZ & FLORACK are current clients and interested companies. CFTalks is a forum where renowned experts from Germany and abroad, in a compact but comprehensive manner, inform about latest developments, strategies and trends in IP law. CFUpdate is a course-format in which expert practitioners provide attendees with basic and in-depth knowledge on practical aspects of IP law.
