Becoming a patent paralegal

As a patent paralegal, you—like a patent attorney—are partially responsible for the path a new technology takes and how it can best be protected. With your work, you help to ensure that companies remain innovative and competitive. The training at COHAUSZ & FLORACK makes you fit for all activities in the field of intellectual property rights—and in most cases is the starting point for a long-term cooperation.

Tasks of a patent paralegal

There are lots of legal services relating to intellectual property rights. And as a patent paralegal, you are responsible for them – making you a valuable support for patent attorneys. In addition, you also deal with organisational and commercial tasks. Your activities in particular:

Preparation of applications

You prepare the respective applications for patent, trademark or utility model applications. You support the patent attorneys when submitting the applications (also online) as well as with the associated fee calculations and payments.

Monitoring fees

You calculate the cost and fees for various intellectual property rights and see that payments are made in timely fashion.

Organization

You keep an eye on everything and organize and coordinate appointments with clients, courts and authorities.

Deadline monitoring

The observance of deadlines set by courts and authorities is also one of your responsibilities.

Correspondence

You carry out all correspondence in the form of letters, emails, and other texts on the PC—independently, according to dictation, in German or English.

Managing files

You take care of the formalities: setting-up and managing files, filling out applications, and requesting missing documents.

Administrative tasks

You contribute towards maintaining, defending, and transferring intellectual property rights. You also assume important tasks when it comes to annulment, cancellation or infringement proceedings. Your basic knowledge of intellectual property rights helps you to do so.
