Gottfried Schüll has been one of the world's leading patent attorneys for more than two decades. He develops enforcement strategies that have enabled patent owners to successfully monetize their patent portfolios. He has litigated major cases in the fields of information and communication technology, electronics and semiconductors on behalf of international clients of all sizes. He is admitted to practice before the EU Unified Patent Court, the German Federal Supreme Court, the German Federal Patent Court, and the German and European Patent Offices.
He has been significantly involved in patent infringement proceedings based on standard essential patents (SEPs) from the very beginning. The owners of SEPs concerning video compression (MPEG-2, AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265) and communication technology (TCP/IP, NFC, 4G, DSL) have relied on his advice in complex litigation against the users of their technologies for more than two decades.
Based on this experience in successfully enforcing SEPs, infringement actions based on HEVC/H.265 SEPs were settled in 2023 by the global market leader in smartphones and TVs taking a patent portfolio license. This, as well as the successful enforcement actions against the largest Chinese smartphone and TV manufacturers based on AVC/H.264 SEPs since 2015, have contributed to Via Licensing Alliance's corresponding licensing programs being considered the gold standard in SEP licensing.
Gottfried Schüll has played a leading role in well over 750 patent disputes and nullity proceedings.
