During his physics studies at RWTH Aachen University, Martin Rütten specialized in experimental solid state physics and additionally gained extensive experience in the fields of materials physics and medical physics as an Erasmus scholar at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. After his studies, he joined the "Memory and Cognitive Technologies" team at IBM Research in Zurich for one and a half years as fellow of the "Marie Curie Actions" programm of the European Commission. He also worked on novel electronic storage media during his PhD at the Institute IA for Physics of New Materials at RWTH Aachen University.

Following his doctorate, Martin Rütten became a German patent attorney trainee in 2017 at COHAUSZ & FLORACK and part-time at the University of Hagen, before he successfully completed his training in 2021 at the German Patent and Trademark Office and the Federal Patent Court. In addition to the German trainee program, he also completed his training as an European patent attorney. Since 2021, Martin Rütten has been advising national and international companies, in particular from the fields of IT- and communications technology, in all areas of intellectual property protection as a patent attorney at COHAUSZ & FLORACK.
