Detailed profile

Dr. Natalie J. Kirchhofer obtained a graduate degree in biochemistry with major electives immunology and organic chemistry from the University of Tübingen, Germany. As Fulbright Scholar she spent an academic research year with Nobel laureate Prof. Gunter Blobel at Rockefeller University, New York. Sponsored by a Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds Scholarship she was admitted to the International Max-Planck Research School (IMPRS) and subsequently obtained her PhD at the Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich, investigating DNA double-strand break repair mechanisms in the laboratory of Prof. Stefan Jentsch.

She joined the Chemistry, Pharma and Life Sciences practice of COHAUSZ & FLORACK in 2010 and began her education in intellectual property law. After several further stations and clerkships at the Düsseldorf Appeals Court (senate for patent infringement cases), the German Patent and Trademark Office and the Federal Patent Court, she was accredited as a German and European patent attorney in 2014.

Natalie worked for six months in the IP litigation practice group of Ropes & Gray LLP in New York gaining hands-on experience in U.S. patent litigation. Having passed the USPTO Patent Bar Exam in 2014, she is also well familiar with U.S. patent prosecution. Natalie joined COHAUSZ & FLORACK as a patent attorney in October 2014.

In her daily practice, she specializes on chemistry, pharma and life sciences patents and advises both biotech startups as well as German, U.S. and international chemical and pharmaceutical companies in all aspects of intellectual property law. Natalie not only has particular expertise in drafting patent applications, but also in providing patent infringement, patent invalidity and freedom-to-operate opinions as well as representing clients in contentious proceedings such as EPO oppositions and German patent nullity proceedings.

In addition, Natalie is also active as an author and speaker in chemical and pharmaceutical patent law.

She speaks German, English and French.
